Stingy Stitches - September 2007

Twirling Ballerina! (LINK)

September 29th 2007 07:30
When I was a little girl I dreamed of being a ballerina, of course I also dreamed of being an archaeologist and a fashion designer and we can all see how that banned out.
My ballet dream was the one I pursued with every fibre of my tiny chubby being and I lived in my ballet shoes.
Ballet shoes were behind comfortable they were pretty and pink with ribbons and they were made out of the softest leather.

Usually I went through eight pairs a year due to my tendency to wear them everywhere including the beach.

One of the things I hated about growing up was being forced into wearing blister inducing horrifyingly high shoes in the name of fashion. I’ve twisted my ankle five times and my skin is covered in scars from shoe-induced blisters. I was delighted when I discovered that ballet shoes were back! I could finally wear my slippers until my hearts content.
I also however learned some important lessons.

1: Never ever buy ballet slippers from Target trust me on this. I’m saying this as a friend and fashion guru. Although they may look gorgeous the back of these shoes are as hard as rocks and they will never ever soften. They will rip your ankles to shreds and you’ll be forced to wear bandaids under your stockings for days.

2: Some places will try to rip you off and convince you that a set of ballet flats are really worth a hundred dollars. The answer is no, on average a set of these shoes should cost only thirty at the most.

3: Try looking for real leather if possible, Patent ballet shoes may look shiny and gorgeous but they chip like tacky day old nail polish.

The best set I’ve found this spring happens to be this pair from pulp shoes (www.pulpshoes.com.au) yes they cost fifty dollars but they’re made entirely out of real leather and they fit like gloves.

THE DOLLAR IS STRONG SO BUY TSHIRTS ONLINE

September 26th 2007 03:18
My lovely boyfriend has informed me that the Australian dollar is very strong currently which means that when you buy a tshirt from the US it's only a dollar more expensive! remember the bad old days when everything American cost twice as much?
This means I can finally go shopping at threadless without killing myself.
www.threadless.com has some of the funniest womens shirts availible and at 24 Australian dollars including postage they're much cheaper then most Australian counterparts.
One of the best designs is this piece.

Ever After, a cheap dress story

September 23rd 2007 07:41
It's occured to me that I'm really not catering to all walks of life when it comes to Stingy Fashion. This entry is devoted entirely to all you beautiful alternative babes out there who dream of wearing a gorgeous medieval dress to your formal/wedding/fancy dress party.
The Peace Angel " Ever After" dress has been around for around six years ( I wore it myself to my formal) made out velvet and satin with a sequined ribbon bodice its truly stunning.
It also costs normally $170 dollars

Smocks and Smockettes

September 20th 2007 13:25
One of the big fashion stables this season is a smock dress, which is essentially a smock that was once used as maternity wear in the sixties.
Unfortunately these dresses despite only containing half a metre of fabric are very expensive! And to make matters worse they make you look pregnant.
Thankfully I’ve managed to find a few alternatives at Bargains Paradise on Pitt Street Mall

Ratouille

September 18th 2007 10:40

So the big piece of weirdo “ what the hell is that?” piece of couture at New Yorks Fashion week was this turtleneck covered in rats.
I bet the creator will insist he had a deep and meaningful explanation behind it and I’m sure he’ll thrown in words like neo paginism and Post Modernism

Red Eye

September 11th 2007 02:15
One of the big fashion trends to explode across Australia is the return of the giant over sized sunglasses a look pioneered by Jackie O in the early sixties.
Personally I love this trend because its both functional and quirky, seriously guys in our climate the more of your face covered with dark glasses the BETTER after all nothing says bogan like a tanned face wrinkled with sun damage.
The only problem is that celebrities have jumped onto this style with a vengence meaning its impossible to buy a cheap pair of sunnies in this particuler style

One of the great things about the APEC summit is that all the stores in the CBD district are currently holding frantic sales to make up for lost business.

The best sale happens to be at the SUITE 62 located right in front of the ticket barriers at Townhall station

GUARD YOUR EARS

September 5th 2007 12:33
With the APEC summit descending onto Sydney as we speak I’ve found searching for bargains very difficult what with having to dodge protesters and foreign businessmen.
So today instead of handing over another great store location I’ve decided to write a how to guide.
AKA how to buy cheap accessories without destroying your ears or skin

718 George Street

September 3rd 2007 11:32
[Evening kittens, after being informed by my blog email that my site has now reached 29 hits a day ( wowee my regular blog gets that many hits a month) I've decided we've developed a trusting relationship and I'm going to tell you all one of my big secrets.
Three years ago while shopping with my fellow writing buddy Rhiannon ( place myspace link here) I discovered 718 George Street Sydney. Located in the china town district of George street the store has no official "name" its sign proclaiming its a seller of " Good quality discount clothing" however its so much more then that. This kids is where the cool kids go when they want to shop. By cool I don’t mean the Victoria Beckham types who will buy anything that’s retail price could support a third world country, I mean the real cool, the actual cool, the cool that starts trends.
Three years ago this store was selling the classic ultra tiny infamous denim "kilt" mini skirt for less then five dollars, which would be the staple wardrobe piece for every teenage girl by the following summer
